A Little Rock Artist Named Randy Rhodes

Like my other post, I haven't heard much of his work, either. Don't think I am "uneducated" in the rock field, mind you I have just been listening to a lot of Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, Led Zeppelin, Argent, Terry Reid, Hendrix, you know.

What band is he from, and could you all recommend some signature tracks of his?

These forums are great

"dude we gotto edecate you" says Teacher.

I say the same about everyone else. Many people don't know Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, Terry Reid, Procol Harum, etc., and I think these people need educating.

So take that.

=Brendan= Oh, one more thing:

There was a great interview with Randy in the August 2004 issue of Guitar World. I learned something from his comments on practising trills to develop finger strength.

oh yeah i remember that. it was intersting that ozzy picked him before he even played. just because randy bought a little practice amp when he tried out and everyone else bought like half stacks.

Thanks for all the info, guys, I certainly learned some more about him through that link and I'll have to keep my eye open for some more of his work.

That's why we request radio songs, right?

I will now sign my name.

Ozzy hired him while he was tuning according to an Ozzy interview I read years ago. He hadn't even played any music yet!

Randy Rhodes was really into learning classical guitar,
Even when they were on tour Randy would seek out classical teachers wherever they were playing.
Just goes to show you a thing or two about dedication, probably while the rest of the band was out partying or something he was probably playing his guitar.
I've heard Jimi Hendrix was the same way, I guess he even took his guitar into the bathroom when he had to relieve himself.

He used to play for Quiet Riot(1977-79) before he joined up with Ozzy

NO WAY! I didn't know that.

Hehe, I actually *SAW* Quiet Riot in concert years ago, it was them, Fastway, and Saxon, opening for Iron Maiden. We had our resident groupie chicks with us and they 'sneaked' onto Iron Maidens tour buss . . . anyway, they got us invited to Iron Maidens hotel for a party after the show. We showed up, but the band had decided they didn't wanna have a perty so their security booted us, along with a handfull of others that had been invited, out of the hotel.

Luckilly, one of our groupie girls had messed around with someone that was with Saxon as well, and knew where they were, so we went to their hotel.

Actually, that really was a *weird* night come to think of it. I don't remember *why* but, after we left Saxons hotel, we ended up being chased by some southsider hispanic gang bangers. This was in the early eighties in San Antonio mind you so by that I mean they were probably M&M (Mexican Mafia). I think maybe it was cuz they wanted the girls in our car . . .

Anyway, we are hauling down some street near downtown SA and these guys are takign pot shots at our car and we go careening into the parking lot of this milk botteling plant/factory - I think it was a Bordens place. There's not exactly a lot of people there of course cuz it is like 4:30AM on a saturday night/sunday morning, but we need a phone to call the cops (the chicks were *freaking* ok?) and this was way before the days of everyone having a cell phone . . .

So we're breaking into this milk bottling plant to find a phone, trying to but a lock off a sliding warehouse door kinda thing with an empty 55 gallon drum we had found on the loading dock, and this car full of gang bangers is pulling into the lot behind us . . .and the chicks are screaming bloody murder . . . and I'm thinking we're about to get capped . . . when a door flys open just down the walk way from us and out comes a security guard with a gun.

The chicks run over and start wailing and pointing at the approaching car, and what a sight they were, all dressed up in their spandex and faces painted like two dollar whorers . . .

So, the security guard, who must have either been drunk or had balls'o' steel . . . he steps out and points his gun right at that car. They stopped and sat there for a minute, seemed liek hours . . . guess they were considering bum rushing him. In the end they backed up and split.

Anyway, the Quiet Riot reference just brought that memory rushing back to my conciousness. Hadn't thought about that in probably 20 some odd years . . .

darn keith, i was gona be first to say that. wat i know is he played for qiet riot, then was hired by ozzy and they became like sole mates and then randy died. bummer. in between that, he recoreded blizzard of ozz ( amazing album with his signature tune i reckon, crazy train) and diary of a madman. on diary of madman tour , ozzy was sleeping in the tour bus wile at a service station or sumthin and a guy that was on tour wid them thought hed be real clever and try and fly a helechopr. randy hopped on board as did some girl called rachael, sharons friend and the basically flew into a house. bummerr again

Brendo,
The catalogue work available on Randy Rhodes is pretty short: The first two Ozzy solo albums (if I'm correct), plus some older quiet riot, before they got big in the 80's. Rhodes was killed in an accident in which he was in an aircraft, buzzing Ozzy's tour bus.

I really like the playing I've heard from him- very fast, melodic metal. Similar to EVH, but maybe more melodic. Its clear that he had a great musical mind. People who I've talked to who saw him say that, in concert, he would use hammer down-pull offs almost continually, demonstrating an ability to vamp in that style without thinking.

I guess the moral of the story is, learn your scales, polish your chops, and stay away from drugs.
