Okay, so a couple days ago I learned a riff that is really fast (for me anyways) and I have all the notes down, I've run through it probably 100 times, spending a couple hours each of the last two nights just running through the riff and I've got it sounding pretty darn good.

I'm kind of anal about these things and I want it to sound absolutely perfect both in timing and tone. I'll run through it and through it telling myself I wont stop for the night until I can get through it flawlessly while recording it. Well it took entirely too long and my wrist started hurting badly due to the positioning I guess, but since I obsess about it so much I had to play through the pain until I got it right... Well, I got "close enough" to perfect and had to call it a night anyways. I am wondering if I should have stopped much sooner, or at a slower BPM to take advantage of muscle memory.

I've learned muscle memory is a very powerful thing with guitar, but is it possible to circumvent the time it takes for muscle memory to sink in when learning a riff by just practicing the **** out of it?

Is there a point in your guitar playing career that your muscle memory has been built up from learning other riffs that you can just pick up a brand new riff really quickly and just play the thing... without the need to play it like 100 freaking times and still struggle to get it perfect.

I can't decide if being a perfectionist is bad or good when it comes to music...

Yesterday i jammed with 4 kids from berklee and i dont even know how to begin to explain how incredible it was. i'm decent at guitar, but these kids were NUTS. they were improvising stuff that was so complex and awesome and sounded tighter than many legitimate, famous bands i've seen. i mean, not really much i can say, but holy **** it was incredible. they are so good. best part was that the drummer wasn't even really a drummer -his main instrument was guitar- and he was very good too. it just makes me want to practice a lot.

Also, one of them had a Dr. Z amp which sounded great. im wondering if anyone has experience with them? i didn't catch the model (though i'm trying to find out) but he ran it through an Orange cab. I think he was using an Sd-1 for overdrive but he had a large pedalboard and im not sure. Anyway his tone was fantastic; Inspired me to begin thinking about getting a better amp (my Mesa just isn't for me).

Hey all you strat players...I was wondering what you have your action set to. Really would like some specs if you have em.

Im curious...since I really cant seem to get the action on my MIM to a comfortable level without fret buzz. Im wondering if the guitar is the trouble...or are my expectations too high?

I know the specs for the MIM are strings 1-4...5/64ths...and strings 1 and 2 are to be set at 3/32(which is just about 6/64ths)

I find this to be too high. I much prefer 4/64ths for strings 1-4//....with the bass strings slightly higher .

I have NO problem getting this action height on my Squier...in fact...I can actually take it down to 3/64ths before it starts to buzz...but prefer the feel of 4/64ths for playability.

Funny because the Squier has 9 gauge..low action and no buzz........I have 11 gauge on the mexican and still cant get it to where I want it.

Maybe the squier has an exceptional neck, not sure. Maybe the MIM is a dud.

All other specs are spot on...relief, etc are set perfectly. I can play with all of the specs..and still not get to where Im happy.

So.....am I asking too much as far as action height???? Just trying to get a concensus on where everybody elses is set....maybe it'll give me a better idea of whats possible.

Like I said...the guitar may be fine...and its my perception that needs tweaking..and not the guitar.

Thanks.

As many of you know, I will be moving to Houston, TX in mid-to-late-January and will be trading a 600 square foot NYC apartment for a nice little house, with a couple of extra bedrooms, one of which will be my office/studio/jam-room (dang I am excited!). Right now, I play through a Fender Champion 600, a 5-watt tube amp, that I love. This is great for small apartment playing, but the prospect of having a music room has me GASing for a more powerful amp. I have some questions that I would love expert advice on regarding what amps I should be looking at.

Here is what I know I would want:

A bit more power to fill a larger room, and hopefully give me enough power that I would eventually be able to play out with it. I am still a noob and a home player, but I am hoping my new life will give me more time to jam with others and I would eventually like to play out. I don't want or need tons of power, but I want to have more than I get out of my 5-watter (which I will be keeping, as it is a great little amp).

I definitely want my new amp to be a tube amp.

I want to play mostly blues and classic rock. My current all-time favorite players are Brian May and Jimmy Page, but I always also dig old blues players like Muddy.

Do you think 15-watts is the right power rating for what I need (like I said I want more power than my current 5 watts, but I want something that will naturally overdrive at less than arena volumes, and still be able to give me great cleans)? If not, what wattage should I be looking for?

Right now, the amps I am wanting to try out are:
Fender Blues Junior
Vox AC-15

What else should be on my list?

My two main axes are an MIM Tele (single coils) and a semi-hollow Gibson ES-137 Classic (humbuckers).

Thanks for your help!

I am still just beginning to think about this, as I won't get the amp until I find the house, move and save a little--afterall, my wife wants some furniture in the house:confuse:. But I do want to play through a few to begin to get a sense of them and want to know what to try.

This is a lesson for beginners and everyone -can and should-
try to play this piece, it doesn’t matter if you are classical guitar player, electric guitar player, acoustic steel string pick player, or nylon string player, this piece is for all!

Here is an example of how to apply the Paco de Lucia’s
technique to other musical styles, like this song by Paul Anka
that Elvis make so famous.

Although some times people attribute this kind of rumba arrangements to “Gipsy Kings” (1987),actually it was 18 years before them that Paco de Lucia innovated with the idea of playing Cuban, South American & popular songs of any country, into rumba flamenca on his 1969 LP entitled:
Paco de Lucia en Hispanoamérica.

“My Way” (E major)

Chords & melody lesson
http://www.rdiaz.org/rdvideo122.html

and with this one, you can play over and have fun!
http://www.rdiaz.org/rdvideo123.html

The chords are:

||: E (x6),D ,C#7,F#m (x2), F#m7maj (x2), F#m7,B7,E (x2),
Bm (x2),E7 (x2),Amaj7 (x2),Am (x2),G#m,C#7, F#m, B7,
Am (x2), E(x2) :||

then the bridge chords are:

Bm(x2),E7(x2), Amaj7(x2), F#m (x4),B7 (x2), G#m (x2),
C#m (x2),Amaj7 (x2), B7 (x2),Am (x2),E (x2) ||
And of course...
you are invited to upload your own video to YouTube playing a solo or the lead melody as you prefer , with your guitar & along with the audio of my video lesson, that is: accompanied by the sound track using the following video:
http://www.rdiaz.org/rdvideo123.html

(make this video in a week or so!...and send me the link, then we will comment over, for different creative approach’s etc,
I am sure you will love this experience!, it will be fun!
here is an example of how to do this kind of videos, certainly that’s with another song but, you can watch it, just to have an idea! http://www.rdiaz.org/rdvideo81.html )

and

( In case you need it!
The rumba strumming pattern you can learn from this lesson
http://www.rdiaz.org/rdvideo51.html )

Ok my friends!
now…
Be creative and have fun!

Ruben Diaz.

Spent another lunch hour today over at GC Hollywood. Yesterday it was Sam Ash, day before that it was at the Carvin Store and then the Mesa/Boogie Shop. Am I an addict, or what?! The sales staffs are pretty sick of me, I think. However, I actually do buy things, now and then. Pack o' strings. A new pick...

Anyway, today I found a really cool amp.

I started a thread down below in search of the Egnater Rebel 30. Never did find the Rebel 30 head, just lots o' combos.

But today I tried a VOX AC30 Classic Custom head and was pretty much blown away. Incredible tone! Its not the hand-made, high-priced version, its the Chinese built one. But, I gotta say, I was in love with the cleans. BEAUTIFUL, chime-like, bell-like tones. It was set up with a Marshall 4x12 slant cab. I'm tellin' ya, this amp CRANKED! I was using a Gibson SG, then switched to a Squier Strat. I swear, this amp had all the tones I hear in my head that I have been seeking!

Anyone own one of these? I did a quick search of the forum here, but came up blank...

So Wednesday I was set for a meeting with the nice lady priest at a chapel/student center that's across the street from the University of Florida (coincidentally about 4 or 5 blocks away from my church) about playing acoustic guitar for their Wednesday night services. She said she preferred to call it a "meeting" rather than an interview. I had no idea whether they have a batch of people they are considering or what. The assistant organist at my church sussed me to the gig.

The assistant organist at my church had originally described them as looking for an acoustic guitarist, but later had described it as singer-guitarist. I'm not much of a singer (though it hasn't stopped me in my rock bands) and have not sung mic'd in church. I told the priest lady that, and that if they were looking for a person to be like the lead singer person who also plays guitar, they should probably find a more talented singer, and that I was more of a guitarist who could also sing along with others. >From photos on the chapel's Facebook page, it looked like they have a praise band with several people mic'd for vocals, so as long as it would be something like that, I decided I would go for it. I know enough when to sing off-mic if something is not working vocally, or just lay out entirely.

Anyhow, my frankness about my abilities or lack thereof didn't scare them away, so I figured that maybe they're desperate enough to give me a shot. I'm actually worr some flat-front khaki's and a button-down shirt to go meet this lady, which is a little more dressy than my usual, but hopefully it would across the right message. From the pics on the web, the services are somewhat informal, as mainly being students.

I figured this would be a fun opportunity to play with a new group of musicians, work on my acoustic chops, and see how another denomination worships. I hadn't been on anything approaching a job interview in decades literally, and I did not really approaching this as one.

Well, I went to the "meeting."

Haha, it was an AUDITION!

So I walk in thinking I'll just be talking to the lady priest, no guitar in hand.

Fortunately, there was an acoustic guitar there, which I borrowed. We did 5 or 6 songs, all acoustically, basically the songs they were going to do for their service this evening. Fortunately, they had their very talented gal singer that I could sing along with. It was weird, I've sung in my various rock bands for years, and I sing (unmic'd) in church when I play, but in a small chapel with only 3 other people, them listening to me sing (and play), it was something beyond what I've experienced before, to say the least.

Since I've been playing in church for about 12 years now, I was familiar with most of the songs they had me do, with a couple exceptions, one of which I guess is part of the Episcopal liturgy. Everything on guitar was easy, cowboy chords basically. My singing was my singing, nothing I can do to change that (well, I could take lessons, but you know what I mean). At least my voice didn't break or anything awful like that. Fwiw I thought I sounded OK with the other singer, who has a lovely voice.

They asked me some theological questions, like whether I had a problem with women clergy (because my denomination of Lutheran does not have women clergy), which, being a feminist, of course I do not. They also asked me about taking communion, and whether I would have a problem with that, or whether my church would. I told them no, that I would not, but I would ask my pastor. Lutherans can be very rigid about that dogma crap, which frankly pisses me off. Maybe I'll ask our vicar, who has long hair and a beard and rides a Harley.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

Anyhow, about noon today I got an e-mail from the lady priest. It said she was looking forward to meeting with me today (Thursday) and asked "Might you bring your guitar?"

Well, I guess that explains why she thought I would have a guitar yesterday, looks like she got her dates mixed up.

Sigh.

Here's the really funny bit. I didn't own an acoustic-electric. OK, so there was a Stratacoustic in a local pawn, really cruddy strings, marked down to $99. As pretty much everyone knows, being shallowbodies, their acoustic tone is pretty awful, people buy them to plug in (something I've heard about a lot of Ovations as well, although I know they also make many models with good acoustic tone).

At any rate, I was considering it because I have an opportunity to get an actual paying gig at a local chapel/student center, with emphasis on acoustic guitar. It would just be a little stipend (I'd better not characterize it as "beer money" or I'd really be a bad person), doing the same thing I already do as a volunteer at my own church. More than anything else, it'd be a chance to work on my acoustic chops, and a chance to play with a new set of musicians, as well as to see how a different denomination worships.

Only thing is, I don't have an acoustic-electric. The only 6-string acoustic I have is a no-name MIJ my dad bought in Japan in the '70's that is quite tinny. I could mic it, but I doubt the results would be very satisfactory.

Thus, I was considering the Stratacoustic.

Some bonus money came in, so I decided to pick it up, so at least I would have something to play with, if I should get this church thing. But since I hadn't been shopping elsewhere, I stopped at a couple other pawns before getting to the shop with the Stratacoustic.

At one of the other pawns, I found a regular-sized body cheapo MIC cutaway acoustic-electric for $100. It's tone was much nicer acoustically, and it's intonation was spot-on. The Fender's had been iffy.

So I bought the MIC cheapo acoustic, even though I knew doing so would make me a bad person. Checking the web, the specs are:

Cutaway acoustic/electric steel string guitar with spruce top, Linden wood sides and back, maple neck plus rosewood fingerboard.

Built-in pre-amp with 3-band equalization, volume control, and 1/4" output jack.

So why, you are asking, does this make me a bad person? After all, I bought the guitar to play in church.

Well, here is the guitar:

It did not come with the instructional videos, chord chart poster, or gigbag.

The best part: at the audition, I found out that they don't mic/amplify for that service anyhow. You may all now ridicule me no end.
